Dr. Rodney Young, May 14, 1953, continued

was suggested that money from the Coxe fund could be used to make it possible to pay the total salary in cash. Also, that it would be possible perhaps to transfer the University part of my salary to the Curium fund and for me thus to be able to draw the total amount from it.

6. It was agreed that the remaining half of my salary be used to hire a substitute for the fall term of 1953 on the assumption that you would be in Philadelphia during the spring semester of 1954.

7. Various possibilities for a substitute had been explored by me and were discussed:

a. Miss Mary Hamilton Swindler. Not available since she has accepted a position at Bryn Mawr for 1953-54. b. Miss Louise A. Holland. Not available since she has accepted a position at Bryn Mawr substituting for Mrs. Michael. c. Miss Evelyn B. Harrison. Probably would not be available since she has accepted a fellowship at the Agora Excavations and is due to depart June 13. d. Mrs. Evelyn Smithson. Possibilities not fully explored. Question whether or not satisfactory to you and whether, in any case, we should not try to get substitute with more experience. e. Miss Lucy T. Shoe. She has very kindly offered to help out if no other person can be found, and is perhaps agreeable to a part time commuting arrangement from the Institute for Advanced Studies.

It was requested that I negotiate with prospective substitutes and make offers suitable to agreement reached.

Mr. Benson has informed us that he plans to leave for Gordion July 7. The possibility that Mr. Wace might be asked to take on the publication of the Bamboula material was considered. It was pointed out that Mr. Wace has now left America and will be spending the greater part of the summer in Mycenae. He will, incidentally, be spending some time in Nicosia (June 13 to 25). He has been reappointed at the Institute for Advanced Study for the year 1953- 54. In view of the fact that part of the Bamboula material is here in Philadelphia, it was suggested that if he were willing to undertake it, he might be able to work with the material here during the coming year and, if he should later settle in Cyprus,
