May 14, 1953Dr. Rodney S. Young Amerikan Hafriyati P. K. 14 Polatli, Turkey
Dear Rodney:
Fro has asked me to wrtie up, for the benefit of you and Mr. Madeira, the conclusions which he, Ted and I reached in our conference about Curium this afternoon.
1. We agreed to carry out the proposed program at Curium during the year from September 1, 1953 to August 31, 1954. It will be very much to our advantage to do so since the experienced technical staff at Curium will be available to us, and because it will be possible at this time to bring in appropriate people to carry on the program of excavation and research from nearby and at comparatively little expense.
2. The question as to whether funds from the bequest would be available in time or not was brought up and the opinion was expressed that if payment were delayed advances could be made from other funds in anticipation of the bequest. (Note: will filed for probate today.) It was thought possible that the sale of stocks, especially Cyprus Airways, might not realize their face value but that risk would have to be taken.
3. It was decided that I should undertake to direct the work at Curium during that period.
4. I proposed, not as a condition of acceptance, but as a request for consideration, if circumstances permit, that at the end of the year at Curium I be given one semester's leave of absence to work in Athens on publication for which I have previous obligations, in lieu of a leave of absence which I had proposed to request for the summer of 1954. It was decided that this proposal could be considered by you and Fro when plans and prospects for the fall of 1954 were more definate.
5. It was decided that I should receive half of my University salary during that period and that the balance be made up from the Curium budget, the total amounting to $5,000. Fro and Ted expressed the opinion that I should receive the total amount in cash and not, as proposed, partly in kind in the form of free board and lodging. They pointed out that it is normal for an excavator in the field to receive free keep. It
