Handwritten: Dear Fred:-
Although Rodney and I have been corresponding regularly I am afraid I've been rather bad about writing you, and hope you will forgive me. We have had an extraordinarily dry winter here which has made it possible to work a good deal out of doors. I have been working at Apollo, digging a little but not opening any new areas. Almost all excavation has been confined to the South Building. I found a good deal more had to be cleared to make the building more intelligible. I have also been doing some repair and restoration on a small scale. Among the debris in three of the rooms were column drums and capitals which had never been cleared. It had been our hope some day to set these up where they once stood. In room 3, the central room which still has its paved floor, I have set up 5 columns including one complete with its capital. I am now beginning to set up three more in room 5. The Government has leant me a tripod and block and tackle which does the work for us with minimum amount of effort. Since you were here we have fenced in with a barbed wire fence the Palace-Bath-Theater and the Apollo sites. As we cannot afford to have a guard for both sites Peter Megaw has offered to take over the Palace-Bath-Theater site when Deke finishes up this coming summer. He will then provide a guard who will be on the Government payroll. I suggested to Megaw that the Government might be interested in putting in a good road to take visitors to the site from the main Limassol-Paphos road. He tells me he will be able to persuade them to do so, as this site and that of Apollo are becoming two of the main show places in the island. I have just planted over 500 trees in the Apollo area. The Government offered to plant as many as I wanted and wherever we thought they might add to the general appearance of the site. They are doing it at their own expense.
