November 30, 1951Mr. George McFadden Curium Excavations Episkopi Limassol, Cyprus
Dear George:
I was glad to have your letter of November 21st and to hear of progress at [handwritten: Kourion]. I also enjoyed your account of the archaeology of Cyprus in the AJA which I passed on to Mr. Madeira. I have also just been talking with him about our proposed trip to the Near East and have worked out a tentative schedule as follows: Cyprus, about March 7th to 10th, Nippur, about March 16th, and Gordion, about March 23rd. It looks now as if there will be Mr. Madeira, Mr. Barringer and Mrs. Barringer, and I believe a Mrs. Davis. We expect to be a few days in Egypt before arriving in Cyprus. I do hope you can manage to be in Cyprus at that time and that you can accompany us around the island for a couple of days. I have talked much about the charms of Cyprus and the possibilities for additional work there if all the other areas in the Near East get too hot to handle. Do you think you can manage to put us up for at least a night at Episcopi? Also, what about getting across from Alexandria to Cyprus and from Cyprus to Beirut? It seems to me that probably the best bet is by Egyptian boat although there may be an air line now.
What are your plans for coming home at Christmas time? We are hopeful that the Youngs will be done with their figurine report by that time but this is certainly hard to predict. If you do come home I would like to have you talk with a young man named Ordway who would like to have some experience in archaeology at his own expense before deciding upon this as a career. He might be useful to you but I certainly feel that you ought to talk with him before deciding upon whether or not you can use him out there during the Spring. Rodney may also consider taking him to Gordion but I will get him down here from New York to meet you both at Christmas time if you are going to be here. Everything seems to be going very well around the Museum. I look forward to seeing you either at Christmas or at Cyprus in March.
Best wishes,
Froelich Rainey
