YALE UNIVERSITY DEPARTMENT OF CLASSICS
October 7, 1950Mr. DeCoursey Fales, Jr. Curium Excavations Episcopi, Limassol Cyprus
Dear Mr. Fales:
Thank you for the copy of the coin list. My previous letter must have been badly expressed if it suggested either criticism of you for the condition of the coins or fear that you would criticize us. I simply meant to comment on the fact that there was great variation in the legibility of the coins when cleaned and that, as any excavator knows, may be entirely accounted for by soil conditions.
The date of the bath in the reign of Theodosius II is certainly not in the least inconsistent with the fact that the majority of coins are of Arcadius and Honorius. The bronze issues of Theodosius II are very small compared with the large output of his predecessors and there is nothing at all surprising in the proportions that you find.
The last set of coins has come and we are working on them now.
Yours sincerely,
