I don't think this is what you and Pete had in mind. Fales would be able to clear the palace, very likely, in a single season, but the balance of the grant ($9,000 minus $3,000, any) would be inadequate to complete the excavation of the bluff of Curium. As Mr. Hill writes, the grant would be adequate for the first year but not nearly enough for the second or third. If, however, we were to go on with the program which was agreed upon last September, we might with some luck succeed in clearing both the sanctuary of Apollo and the palace on schedule time. This is why I have asked for unrestricted funds. After the publication of the bluff with its fine mosaic, we could then turn to any other site which you and Pete might be interested in seeing published. I don't think the expedition can afford to undertake such else.

I'm afraid this has been a long letter but I felt I should make the position more clear before you approach the Philosophical Society. Mr. Hill has been all my letters to Pete and I am sending him a copy of this letter to you. I don't know what his reaction will be to the thought of giving up the dig at Apollo. I want to make it clear that Pete's site of the palace can be cleared whether funds are restricted to the bluff or not. The choice to be made is not between Apollo and the palace but between Apollo and another more expensive group of buildings on the bluff. Even if the grant were for Apollo and not for the bluff there is a bare chance both sites might be cleared over a period of time. This, however, would not be a satisfactory solution either, especially if Pete is planning to start Fales off on his own site this Fall, as he wouldn't want to undertake to do this without adequate and ready funds.

To sum up I am listing the sites mentioned in your letter with what might be done on each if we are fortunate enough to obtain the proposed grant.

Apollo More than minimum required for clearing Apollo & Palace Sufficient Palace & Theatre Inadequate Palace & basilica Basilica alone Adequate Propylon Unexcavated. An unknown quantity but on a very expensive site.

There is always an element of guess work in these matters but the estimates are based on recent experience and after walking carefully over all our sites. You will see from
