… candidate for the palace would direct this squad, while Mr. Hill and I cleared the sanctuary of Apollo and the Youngs continued their work on the publication of Curium antiquities. It is important that work toward publications should go on, particularly so if no unrestricted funds are to be allocated to Curium for the year 1950-51. Our ultimate goal, of course, is publication. There is a good chance that all this might be done on a fluid budget of $18,000. The deficit, at least, might be managed and, as far as I can see, would be worth the risk. It would be a practical, working budget, based on Mr. Hill's plan, and might effectively implement our September program. The alternative budget, that is to restrict our yearly grant of $3,000. to the bluff of Curium, would make the position something as follows:
$ 3,200.00 Dr. and Mrs. Young's fellowship.* 1,200.00 Contingencies.* 2,000.00 Normal running expenses Cyprus $750 12 months 13,400.00 1,600.00 For Mr. Hill and me at Apollo. Inadequate. 15,000.00 Present budget 3,000.00 For Falas on the bluff of Curium. Restricted. 18,000.00
Last September it was decided that we were to clear the sanctuary of Apollo and that all other work should be subordinated to that end. The new budget means that Falas would have a good deal more to excavate than Mr. Hill or me to carry out the program at Apollo. If Falas' salary and living expenses are to be debited to the $15,000. budget, there will be hardly any excavation funds left for Mr. Hill or me.
$ 750.00 Falas' salary 560.00 - living expenses $2.00 280 days 1,310.00 Total $1,600.00 For Apollo. 290.00 For Falas out of $15,000 budget Left over for Mr. Hill and me.
*The Youngs' value to the expedition can be measured only in terms of achievement. If they are prepared to stay on neither Mr. Hill nor I think we can afford very well to let them go.
This is a minimum figure and includes shipment of Antiquities, sundry expenses in Philadelphia, trips to and fro from Athens which are apt to become more frequent, transportation of care and tracks of unexpected items which always occur when excavating all kinds of unexpected items with labor in setting them up and on any scale. Renewal or replacement of valuable equipment, etc. Accidents, Essential restoration work, etc.
