CURIUM EXCAVATIONS EPISKOPI, LIMASSOL CYPRUS

6 October 1947The Director, The University Museum, Philadelphia.

Dear Frol, I arrived here a little over a week ago and came down almost immediately with asthma and a bad cold and had to take to my bed for a few days. I'm alright now and am back again at work. I see from the Bulletin that Mr. Hill who seemed much pleased by your letter. He plans to sail from the Piraeus for Cyprus on the 16th of this month. Before beginning excavations at Apollo he is anxious to have me dig a little in the Hellenistic cemetery to make some things down there more clear. He is communicating with Pete about our plans for the autumn campaign. He also very much wants to be here when we begin at Apollo as we shall as soon as he arrives. You asked me to give you an estimate as to how much time would be required to clear the site of Apollo. This is a hard thing to do what with the many contingencies envolved, but I think that three full seasons of uninterrupted work might prove to be a conservative estimate.

In my letter to Mrs. Godfrey of June 4th I gave her an estimate of what I believed our minimum requirements would be to implement Program 1. This estimate was not intended to include any extensive excavations of the precinct of Apollo would encroach upon Program 2 and require more funds and would add a few thousand dollars, probably, to my estimate of $15,000.00 for the present fiscal year. When Mr. Hill comes down we'll attempt to make a careful calculation.

For your information I transferred from my own account to the account of Curium Excavations at the Ottoman Bank at Limassol the amount of 495 Cypriot Pounds and eight Piasters, which is the equivalent of $2,000.00. would you advise the University Treasurer.

I enclose the Bank statement for his files.

The Youngs tell me that this year they would prefer to have the full amount of their joint fellowship ship of $3,200.00 deposited to the credit of their accounts with the State Street, 127 Springfield, Safe Deposit and Trust Company, Springfield, Massachusetts. I am writing Mrs. Godfrey as I understand that this is in her department. I should think that half might be deposited as soon as funds are available, and the balance on the first of January, if this would have your own approval.
