September 11, 1947Mr. George H. McFadden "Bloomfield" Villa Nova, Pennsylvania
Dear Mr. McFadden:
This will be in the nature of a statement of our intentions with regard to the work at Kourion which is addressed to you in your role of financial sponsor rather than your role of excavator. It seems to me that the letter to Dr. Hill which we have discussed will represent an understanding concerning the technical and operational questions concerned with the Kourion dig.
First I should like to say that I am strongly recommending to the Board of Managers that the Museum advance one third of your estimated $15,00 expenditure during the coming season. Furthermore I have every reason to believe that the Board will approve this amount and that you can be reasonably sure of obtaining that sum even though the Board is not meeting until October.
Conversations with you and Dr. Daniel have given me a great deal of enthusiasm for continued work at Kourion and I trust that we can continue under the present arrangement, at least until the major objectives discussed among us have been achieved. I appreciate entirely your dual capacity by yourself and excavator and agree that the matter of funds advanced by yourself and the Museum should be an administrative matter which primarily concerns the two of us as well as the Board of Managers. With regard to the professional aspects of excavation and publication, I believe this should be a matter for mutual agreement between Dr. Hill, yourself and Dr. Daniel, who is the member of our staff directly concerned with all work in the Mediterranean area. In other words, I assume that your correspondence concerned with the planning and conduct of the excavations will be with Dr. Daniel and questions of supporting funds will be with me.
I hope that we will be able to obtain regular reports of your excavations so that Dr. Daniel can be currently informed and so that we may be able to publish in the Museum Bulletin information on the work in Cyprus. I imagine that the real responsibility for such reports as well as the financial reports referred to in our letter to Dr. Hill will be yours.
We appreciate the excellent work you have done at Kourion and I trust that this will be another successful season. Please feel free to call upon me at any time if you think I can be of any assistance.
Very best wishes for a successful season.
Sincerely yours,
