11 September, 1947Dr. B. H. Hill 9 Plutarch Street Athens, Greece

Dear Dr. Hill:

In the thirteen years since you started work at Kourion for the University Museum we have passed through a long transition, highlighted by a major war. The personnel of the Museum directly concerned with the Kourion excavations has changed completely during that time. It seems to us that the time has come to review the relations of the Museum with the expedition and to clarify our present aims and policies. Accordingly I am briefly listing below the basic principles which, I believe, should govern our association. I will be grateful for any comments you may care to make.

1. In the first place I wish to take this opportunity to thank you for your great service in directing our work at Kourion and previously at Lapithos. The success of our work there is largely due to your leadership and wisdom. We are proud that you are associated with the University Museum and look forward with pleasant anticipation to the continuation of this association.

2. We are anxious that the Kourion excavations should continue until at least such time as the chief sections discovered to date are completed and adequately published. These sections should include the Sanctuary of Apollo Hylates, the Palace, the Theater, the Basilica, the Stadium, Bamboula, the Ayios Ermogenes necropolis, and Sotira. We see no reason why we should not proceed to the Kourion excavations is of other areas after this first phase of the Kourion excavations is completed. I have planned a meeting for the near future with Mr. McFadden and Dr. Daniel, at which we will attempt to estimate the time needed and the steps to be followed in order to complete this task. Your comments on these objectives would be appreciated.

3. I am discussing the question of final publication with Dr. Daniel who, I understand, is in touch with you in this regard.

4. It is our conviction that you as Field Director should continue to be in full charge of all field operations of the Kourion expedition. We consider you the executive representative of the University Museum in Cyprus, empowered to make any decision, and enter
