Wed 29 May 1947Dear George,

I use a very old typewriter with an unfamiliarkey-board and poor ribbon to let you and Susanne and John know that I had a very pleasant voyage last week and arrived Saturday morning on time. At Beyrut on Monday I was shown through the museum by the Director, Emir Maurice H. Chebab, the place being closed to the public on Mondays. He has in his workrooms a vast number of terracottas just being arranged on big tables for study. On the way to them I spoke with the Mr Lian who did some work for us on the Palace mosaics once. Mr Chebab, who was a fellow student of Dikaios thinks of coming over to Cyprus [handwritten: in] to his city. His office telephone number is Sarail 99. Seyrig was at the Museum also said the same for you should you come to his city. He took me back to the dock in his car, and later sent it for me to visit thence to the quarters being prepared for the French Institute and to go thence to the American University, where I had tea and lunched with the Waces at the Union Club

I did not try to go ashore with the President and Mrs Dodge. Waces at Alexandria, had at Haifa, but on Wednesday I found the Waces looking with him at the big tea and dinner with them besides him at the side of the Kom ed-Dik. Down as deep hole he is digging in the side of the Kom ed-Dik. Down as much as eight meters [handwritten: M], I should judge, he is still finding Mameluke pottery. On Thursday I visited Waoe in the Museum, was shown treasures from the safe (most interesting the perfect gold and silver plaques from under the corners of the Serapeum with dedicatory inscriptions of Ptolemy III in Greek and hieroglyphs) and lunched with the Waces at the Union Club

I have decided not to try to go to America this fall, and so expect to be free to join in work at Episkopi about when the rest of you are ready. The Blegens and Mrs.Hill plan to leave next week for a fortnight or so in Turkey. When/or if/ you stop here on your way home I expect to be either in town or no farther away than Corinth -- in town if you let me know beforehand.

I shall be writing John by next mail, not having forgotten his request about Stadia. Thus far I haven't been to the AmSchool library at all. A circular from Radcliffe, addressed to the School for Susanne, is being forwarded by ordinary post.

May I say again that I greatly enjoyed my stay with you and John and Susanne and Grace and Joe and am very much indebted to all of you?
