Apart from the importance of the stratification, the season has been highly successful from the standpoint of the pottery, above all the native Cypriote wares. I think that I am completely justified in saying that we have four or five pots which are head and shoulder above any previously known of the Late Bronze Age in Cyprus, and compare very favorably with pottery of the period elsewhere. One Base Ring Ware jug, particularly, is a magnificent piece.
Blegen was here for several days, and seemed much interested in our things. I was delighted to find that he agreed with me on the question of what "Mycenaean" ware was imported, and approved of my interpretation of the sub-Mycenaean pottery I published in my first article. [handwritten: He thought that the one small sherd which I regarded as L.M.IB Marine Style might very well be, though he felt that it was not possible to be certain on the basis of so small a sherd. He was very much interested in the coarse grained pottery of L.H.II type, which I was trying to make into Palace Style.] We now have two more or less complete pots, one with an octopus, the other with lilies. He regards it as a late offshoot of the Palace Style, and says that he has absolutely identical pieces in Troy VI. He does not think that they were made in Greece, but is sure that wherever they were made, the Kourion and Troy pieces are from the same place.
I have had a long letter from Westholm, very enthusiastic about America, and above all of the way you looked after him. He sent me a copy of his correspondence with Speiser about the Corpus, and told me what you must know, that the Council of Learned Societies is willing that I should take part in it, and will subsidize me as soon as I get my degree. Needless to say, I am delighted. My only fear is that it will interfere with digging. Thank you very much indeed for referring the Boston portfolios to me. I would like to do it and could use the money, but don't see where I can find time. I am making a heroic effort to get my degree in order,
