… colonades of two of the five rooms of the building) by Trajan, in 101 A.D. You will recall that other inscriptions had indicated that there were two Apollos here, one Hylates, another uncertain. The Trajan inscription gives us the other : The second inscription is also of Trajan, in 115, and records the completion of the paved road to the propylon which gives access to the road leading from Kourion to Paphos. In addition to all the other information, the inscriptions give us the names of two more proconsuls, both men who were already known, though not in Cyprus. My own season was thoroughly satisfactory. We found superior settlement remains, with two superimposed building periods, one lasting from the 15th to the 14th centuries, the other from the late 14th into the 12th. There were numerous clear floor levels, giving splendid evidence for the development of the pottery. The early building was a very good one, with walls as much as 1.20 m. thick. The chief mystery of the season is a very fragmentary building which looks not unlike a megaron, and which should belong to the early building, though the very few remaining pieces of what appeared to be undisturbed earth contained Archaic sherds. It is so near the surface that the bed-rock is in many places scored by the plow, so I am not sure that the evidence of the sherds is to be trusted, and am rather inclined to attribute it to the early building. Mr. Hill thinks that funds can be provided for publication. As a result I am frantically at work trying to get this year's finds into order. It will not be possible to have all the tombs, but I hope to have the most important ones ready. This will appear as a report on the first three seasons, to be supplemented later by a supplementary report when the whole site is finished. It should give ample material for two or three dissertations, let alone the one required by Bates.
