ON BOARD SCHOONER SAMOTHRACE

2.

of last Spring and of the season which we have just concluded this year. Last year will be important chiefly on account of the sub- Mycenaean and Geometric pottery of the tombs of Kaloriziki in the plane immediately south of Curium. They are going to throw much light on the sub-Mycenaean style, that is to say, of the transitional period between sub-Mycenaean and Geometric. Mr. Heurtly, who has been making a study of parallels in Palestine, visited our Apothyky and said that he frankly didn't know what sub-Mycenaean pottery was until he had seen ours. This year we confined ourselves to couraging the city of Curium. What Mr. Hill digging the city of Curium might prove to be a large suspected last year might prove to be a large Basilica, has been cleared over a fairly wide section and has proved to be a very large capital probably of the Second Century judging from its fine workmanship, with epystyle and marble column base in situ. In another building, which may prove to be a palace, we have uncovered some very beautiful floor mosaics with many inscriptions. The longest is in Homeric verses in praise of Christ. We were glad to find on another of these inscriptions in elegeaic verses the name of our city, "Kourion." Adjoining this building, we have uncovered part of a theatre, or Odeum, which, when completely cleared, will be very impressive indeed. It is not certain yet whether it belongs to Hellenistic or Roman times.

We hope in another season to dig some Classical and Hellenistic tombs; possibly, too, a Bronze Age tomb. We would begin, however, by finishing our clearing of the Basilica, palace, and theatre. Mr. Hill is anxious to dig what
