Objects in the Archive

The objects photographed, drawn and recorded in the Archive’s collections, searched together: the expedition photographs of finds, the excavators’ object cards and their drawings. Each object is described with the terms of the catalogue (object type, material, period, ware, shape, subject) as its caption and record give them; a term deduced rather than stated is marked “probably” on the object’s page. A search for a term finds what is filed under it and under the narrower terms below it, so “sculpture” finds stone and terracotta sculpture. Most finds from an excavation are fragments and sherds: the complete pieces come first, and “Complete pieces only” leaves out the rest.
