The Handbook of the Cesnola Collection of Antiquities from Cyprus (New York 1914) was written by John L. Myres, then Wykeham Professor of Ancient History at Oxford, for the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The collection was formed in Cyprus by Luigi Palma di Cesnola. In his preface Myres calls it a guide to the parts of the collection on display in the Cesnola Room and other departments and an introduction to the ancient arts and industries of Cyprus. It is not a full catalogue: lesser objects are grouped, and the reserve "student series" is left out. References are kept mainly to Cesnola's Cyprus and the Atlas of the Cesnola Collection.

An introduction on the history of the collection and on ancient Cyprus is followed by a bibliography and numbered sections by class: pottery (nos. 1–1000), sculpture, terracottas, small objects in stone and glaze, imported Greek vases, inscriptions, lamps, gold and silver ornaments, finger-rings, seals, metal vessels, bronzes and iron, glass, and ivory, bone, shell and lead. An appendix of inscriptions, tables of reference and a general index close the volume.

How to cite

Cite the book by its author, title and year, then the printed page number; give the scan number in brackets where the page has no number of its own. Every page has its own address (…/p/12), and the reader’s Cite button builds the citation for the page you are on. Pages can also be opened by their printed number: /archive/myres-handbook-cesnola-collection-1914?page=10.
