    Co-signed the original letter to The Times (22 September 1933, led by W. H. Buckler) on the neglected Byzantine and Lusignan monuments of Cyprus; known to the Colonial Office for his trenchant views, and wrote to the previous Governor blaming ignorant Colonial Office officials for not prioritising antiquities.

    His views influenced Montague Rendall, who wrote in support of the Times letter after a month's stay on the island; Caröe's wife was Rendall's first cousin.
