Collector
Samuel Martin Mayhew
fl. 1872–1899 · United Kingdom
London clergyman and F.S.A. who in 1872 showed the British Archaeological Association a bronze mirror said to have been found by Cesnola in Cyprus; his collection was offered by Tregaskis in 1899.
Biography
In 1872 the Rev. Samuel Martin Mayhew, M.A., F.S.A., was a member of the British Archaeological Association, and among many London finds he exhibited to it a bronze mirror case and mirror, engraved and still largely silvered, six inches across. The Association's Journal records it as "found by General Cesnola in a Greek tomb, Cyprus"1. The text names Luigi Palma di Cesnola as the finder and does not say how the mirror reached Mayhew.
His collection, which was largely of finds from London, was offered for sale in 1899 by J. & M. Tregaskis, whose catalogue 449 lists lots headed "Mayhew Collection"3. His dates of birth and death are not recorded.
