Landowner
Mehemet Halofta
fl. 1889–1890 · Ottoman
Ottoman landowner, active 1889–1890. Sold to John Arthur Ruskin Munro.
Life and work
- 1889An unnamed 'respectable blind Turk' owned most of the coveted 'Kaparga' ground at Polis (negotiations opened); later in the same season 'our old acquaintance the blind Turk' owned a wheat field east of site A, partly excavated in 1886-7, which the Fund judged too dear to excavate. Identified with Halofta by the later 'old friend the blind Turk' wording.

- 1890After hard bargaining ('not to be hurried into a bargain'), let his field in the western necropolis at Polis to J. A. R. Munro for the Cyprus Exploration Fund, payment being by the number of shafts sunk. Munro had first taken a courtyard bordering the south end of the field, where one tomb yielded two Attic lecythi of the finest style. Twenty-four tombs were opened in the western necropolis (fifty-six in the eastern).
