Scholar

John Thomson

fl. 1871–1880 · United Kingdom

British scholar, active 1871–1880. Worked with Thomas Backhouse Sandwith.

Life and work

  1. 1871–1880
Made a chemical analysis of glass from the fourth class of Cypriot cemeteries (tombs in which glass vessels predominate) for T. B. Sandwith's paper on the pottery of ancient tombs in Cyprus; described there as 'Mr. John Thomson, son of Professor Thomson, of Glasgow'. His conclusion, as quoted by Sandwith, was that ancient glasses (Egyptian, old Roman) were similar in chemical composition to the Cypriot glass and that the ancients used nearly the same materials in nearly the same proportions as in the author's day.
