- 13 January 1879Read 'Rough Notes on Pre-historic Cyprus' at the Royal Geographical Society: four colonisations of Cyprus (Kittim and Dodanim; Phoenician c. 2000 BC; the 'Cypriotes proper' of the syllabic inscriptions, 2000-1500 BC; Greeks from the 8th c. BC), the Sargon stele from Larnaca now in Berlin, and the ten tributary kings of the seventh century BC, whose names he says he discovered and published in his brother's translation of Herodotus.
