Ernst von Sieglin

1848–1927 · Germany

Stuttgart industrialist whose gift in 1910 put Cypriot vases and terracottas in Dresden and whose money paid for Cypriot pottery bought for the Tübingen collection in 1910 and 1913.

Biography

Ernst von Sieglin (born in Stuttgart on 21 April 1848, died there on 3 October 1927) was an entrepreneur2. In 1910 he donated several Cypriot vases and terracottas to Dresden1.

His money also reached the university collection at Tübingen. Paul Arndt bought Cypriot pottery there in 1910 with Sieglin's funds, and in 1913 Karl Hähnle bought three Cypriot vases in Florence with them1. The Tübingen holding of 29 ceramics and one terracotta was later added to by acquisitions from the Theodor Schreiber collection in 1925 and from B. Schnaps in Berlin in 19361. The sellers of the Cypriot pieces bought with his money are not named.

An expedition to Alexandria also carried his name, and he published part of its report, on the necropolis of Kom esh-Shuqafa, in 19083.
