Summa Galleries

Beverly Hills, United States

Beverly Hills dealer and auctioneer in Greek, Roman, Near Eastern and Egyptian art, issuing numbered catalogues from 1976 and holding its first auction in 1981.

About

Summa Galleries, Inc. traded from Beverly Hills as a dealer and auctioneer in ancient art. Its first catalogue, Catalogue 1: Ancient Art, appeared in December 1976 and listed vases, sculptures, terracottas and bronzes5. Later numbers are cited in the scholarly literature: Catalogue 4, devoted to ancient vases, in November 1978, Catalogue 5 in September 1979, and Catalogue 6 in 19846. A British Museum volume on Italian Iron Age artefacts cites Catalogue 4 for an object3. On 18 September 1981 the firm held Auction I, "Ancient Greek, Roman and Byzantine Art", at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel1,4.

In 1978 the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts bought 34 terracotta reliefs from the gallery8. A Cypriot piece later in the Anastos Collection is recorded in a Christie's provenance as coming from "Summa Galleries; Anastos Collection"2.
