The Cypriot collection
4 small Cypro-Archaic vases from the Niessen collection (1 surviving, 3 lost in the Second World War); the survivor is deposited at the University of Cologne (2012)
History
- 1934Bought the collection of Carl Anton Niessen, about 1,500 objects in the main text of Recke's survey, of which only four small Archaic Cypriot vases were Cypriot. Recke notes it was the first Cypriot material to enter a German public collection after the post-1929 slump. The catalogue entry prints 'insges. 15000 Antiken', apparently a misprint for 1,500.

- 1943Three of the four Cypriot vases are recorded as war losses ('Kriegsverlust'); the date is not given in the entry and is a general war-loss label. One Cypro-Archaic vase survives, deposited at the University of Cologne. Published by K. Berger and F. Fless, Kölner Jahrbuch 28, 1995, 12-13 nos. 3-6.
