Jean-David Cahn AG
Basel, Switzerland · founded 25 June 1999
Basel ancient-art gallery founded in 1999 and directed by the classical archaeologist Jean-David Cahn, dealing mainly in Greek, Etruscan and Roman art, with a few Cypriot pieces in its 2020 auction.
About
Galerie Cahn in Basel traces its name to Münzhandlung Cahn, a coin business that according to the gallery began in Frankfurt in 1863; the Basel gallery was founded in 1999 by the fourth generation of the family1. Jean-David Cahn AG has been entered in the Basel commercial records since 25 June 1999, with Jean-David Cahn on its board4. Cahn is described as a classical archaeologist and a founding member of the International Association of Dealers in Ancient Art; he is also a member of the Swiss dealers' association VSAK, and the gallery says it has shown at TEFAF Maastricht since 19921.
The stock on the gallery's site is Greek vases, Roman sculpture and bronzes, Celtic, Etruscan and Italic material, glass and prehistoric stone tools2. The firm also holds auctions. Its Auction 2, "Kunstwerke der Antike", took place on 21 September 2007 and is cited in the bibliography of Beyond Cyprus8.
On 30 November 2020 Cahn Auktionen AG sold "Ancient Artwork from Galerie Cahn", 61 lots chosen by Jean-David Cahn and Ulrike Haase3. Lot 14 was a Cypriot oinochoe of the Cypro-Archaic period, about 725-650 BC, 23.1 cm high, with concentric-circle decoration, estimated at CHF 2,400-3,200. Lot 13 was a terracotta female idol on a round stand, 9.6 cm high, catalogued as Eastern Mediterranean Bronze Age, possibly Cypriot, of the 2nd millennium BC3. A further 2020 lot, a Cypriot jug of the 7th-6th century BC, 18.3 cm high, is listed on the auctioneer's LiveAuctioneers page7.
The Cypriot collection
Cypriot material is marginal: the gallery's own site lists no Cypriot category, and the only Cypriot pieces found are two lots (a Cypro-Archaic oinochoe and a possibly Cypriot Bronze Age terracotta idol) in the 2020 Cahn Auktionen sale (2020)
