About

Barakat Gallery is the business of Fayez Barakat, which according to its own history page grew from a family business in Palestine and opened its first major gallery in the Old City of Jerusalem in 19671. The gallery lists Amman in 1973, Beverly Hills in 1983, London (Mayfair) in 2003, Abu Dhabi (Emirates Palace) from 2007 to 2015, Seoul in 2016 and Hong Kong in 2017. It says its stock was classical, biblical, Egyptian and pre-Columbian, later widened to African art, and that Barakat worked with Kathleen Kenyon on Jerusalem excavations from 1961 and opened a Bethlehem gallery in 19701.

The London company, The Barakat Gallery Limited, was incorporated on 3 October 2003 with Fayez Sadi Barakat as director7.

Cypriot pieces on the gallery's website are offered by enquiry, without prices9. They include a Base Ring bull askos (SK.036), dated 1450-1200 BCE2; a bilbil (PF.0125)3; a terracotta bull (P.0458)4; a red polished anthropomorphic vessel (LO.1231)5; and a Bichrome jar (LO.847)6. The gallery's descriptions present the bilbil and the bull as made on Cyprus and exported to the Levant. Only the askos prints a provenance: the collection of Desmond Morris from 1967 to 1985, then Christie's London sale 9296, lot 76 (6 November 2001), and Bonhams sale 15216, lot 149 (26 October 2007)2.
