Aweidah Gallery

Jerusalem, Israel · founded 1960

Family antiquities gallery on the Via Dolorosa in Jerusalem, founded in 1960 according to a 2018 press feature and run by Maher Aweidah, with a small Cypriot pottery section online.

About

The Aweidah Gallery stands on the Via Dolorosa in Jerusalem's Old City. A 2018 press feature says Maher Aweidah's father founded it in 1960 in a Crusader-era building, and that it sells antiquities from the Neolithic to the late Islamic period, mainly to European and American clients1. The gallery's own About page says it has traded for more than 40 years, stresses material from the time of Christ, and notes its membership of Trocadero3.

Its online catalogue of about 380 items is arranged by period and material: Holy Land, Bronze Age, Iron Age, Roman, Herodian, Egyptian, Greek, Near Eastern, Byzantine, lamps, glass, coins, jewellery and Cypriot4. The Cypriot category holds about ten pottery pieces dated by the gallery between 2400 and 600 BC, most of them burnished Late Cypriot vessels dated 1550 BC: bilbils, juglets, jugs and an amphoriskos4. The gallery gives a findspot for only one, stock no. 00350, from Hebron before 19784,5. Items are offered with an export licence and a certificate of authenticity, according to the gallery4.

A Cypriot stone head of about 700 BC was offered at Setdart in Barcelona in October 2023 with the provenance "Aweidah Gallery, Israel, 2014" and an Israel Antiquities Authority export authorisation of 7 August 2014. It had been shown at Feriarte in Madrid in 20222.
