Archea Ancient Art

Amsterdam, Netherlands · founded 1995 · closed 2018–2022

Amsterdam dealer in Greek, Etruscan, Roman and Egyptian antiquities, opened in 1995 by Vincent Geerling, who also founded the Basel Ancient Art Fair and chaired IADAA from 2013.

About

Archea Ancient Art was opened in Amsterdam in 1995 by Vincent Geerling, after about 25 years of collecting, with stock offered at moderate prices according to the IADAA member page1. The gallery dealt in Greek, Etruscan, Roman and Egyptian antiquities.

Archea exhibited at the pAn Amsterdam art and antiques fair from 1998 to 20131. With Jacques Billen and Robert Bigler, Geerling co-initiated the Brussels Ancient Art Fair in 2003, and he created the Basel Ancient Art Fair, first held on 12 to 17 November 2004 at the Wenkenhof with 14 dealers from the International Association of Dealers in Ancient Art1,3. He had sat on the association's board for many years before becoming its chairman in 20131. A Greek bronze strigilis that he bought at pAn Amsterdam in 2003 was later sold at Zeeuw in Amsterdam on 18 November 2020, lot 1018, with Archea in its provenance5.

The gallery closed when Geerling retired. A notice on its website, captured by the Internet Archive on 6 December 2022, speaks of "23 years of dealing in ancient art", thanks clients he met at pAn Amsterdam and the Brussels and Basel fairs, and says he remains available for advice2. The Art Newspaper interviewed him on the antiquities trade in 20234.
