The project
In 1959 levelling for a new Nicosia-Limassol road west of Kophinou exposed four tombs, which the Department of Antiquities explored1,2. Karageorghis presents the discovery as evidence for a necropolis not previously suspected there1. Tombs 1 to 3 were Cypro-Archaic II, with White-Painted V, Bichrome V and Bichrome Red II (V) pottery and pointed-base Plain-White V amphorae1,2. Tomb 4 was Hellenistic and held a single painted lagynos with ivy leaves on the shoulder1,2. The objects removed from the tombs are at the Larnaca regional museum, inventory nos. 1545–15481.
