The project
Bulldozing for a new road exposed a Cypro-Classical cemetery at Panatsas, about 5 km east of Evrykhou, and in 1963 the Department of Antiquities excavated two of its tombs1. The bulldozer had disturbed the burials in Tomb I, a roughly rectangular chamber with a niche; its pottery was mainly Plain-White V and VII and Red-Slip IV (VI), including a Plain Ware amphora 33 cm high that imitates contemporary Attic pottery1. Tomb II had a chamber 5.50 by 9 m divided into two smaller chambers, with two niches with benches near the entrance and three in the rear chamber1. Its finds included small jugs, cooking pots and saucer-shaped lamps, a Bichrome VI jug with stylised trees and a miniature teapot1. The chronicle dates both tombs to the fifth century BCE1. The material from the two tombs is at the Cyprus Museum under inventory number 1963/XII-10/21.
