The project
In early summer 1975 M. Fortin made a reconnaissance of Barsak and the other sites on the Ayios Sozomenos plateau1. He described at Barsak a double enclosure with walls about one metre wide, enclosing approximately five hectares, and noted no foundations inside1. At Nikolidhes he described an enclosure of roughly 250 by 250 metres, with traces of rows of small rooms beside the eastern and southern walls1. Fortin considered Barsak most likely Late Cypriot I and Nikolidhes occupied in the first phase of the Late Cypriot period, and proposed that Barsak, Nikolidhes and Kafkalia formed a defensive system between the Mesaoria plain and the copper belt1. He published the visit in 1995, when he reported that the sites lay in a military zone and could not be visited1.
