Analiondas-Palioklichia: surface survey, 1992–1993
1992–1993 · Analiondas-Palioklichia
Jennifer Webb and David Frankel's surface survey of Analiondas-Palioklichia in 1992–93, which counted pithos sherds and stone tools over about 8,000 m² and led them to read the site as a Late Cypriot IIC storage centre.

The project
Jennifer M. Webb and David Frankel examined the surface of Analiondas-Palioklichia intensively in 1992–93, during the second season of excavations at Marki, and counted the visible material in 10 × 10 m squares in January 19931. The site covers about 8,000 m² and its surface was dominated by pithos fragments, querns, rubbers, grinders and fragmentary limestone vessels; the densest pithos concentration, up to 210 sherds per square, lay in the western part1. They recorded 207 stone artefacts1. Webb and Frankel assign the pithos types to Late Cypriot IIC and identify a 13th-century BC agricultural production and storage centre. They propose that it was a support village within the political orbit of the Ayios Sozomenos cluster1. The representative collection was returned to the site, except an impressed pithos fragment, CM 1993/I-20/1, lodged in the Cyprus Museum1. They published the survey in 1994 in the Journal of Mediterranean Archaeology1.
