Late Bronze Age II
Lid from a pyxis
Lid from a pyxis: Large disc from a pyxis with engraved decoration on one side and a central pin as a handle. The decoration is of outer borders of five and six close set incised bands which eclose triple arcs. In the centre a compass drawn many petalled rosette. Two sets of incised bands separate the three layers of petals (six, six and tips of twelve). At the centre there is ahole for securing the handle which is of an oval section with four groups of grooves and ridges and has a fla top and ends in a plain cylindrical dowel. The disc is probably the lid of a circular box. It is in several pieces and it has been mended, fixed to a perspex mount. There may be more fragments amongst the box of "general ivory" from Tomb 3A.
