Bichrome Woman Pitcher Jug

Pottery woman-and-pitcher jug in Bichrome red ware; wheelmade body with moulded and hand-made applied figure; ovoid body on tall stemmed conical foot (hollow); ridge at junction of neck and body; tall cylindrical neck splaying outwards to an everted rim (mostly missing); vertical handle made of two joined strips of clay from shoulder to just below the neck with two small, flat knobs, aping metal rivers, at either side of the junction with the neck; applied snake-like moulding along the handle; female figure wears a chiton and himation; the right hand clutches the side of the chiton; she is richly adorned with jewellery and wears a conical cap on her carefully moulded head; narrow band of hair above forehead is rendered as a series vertically incised lines; feet more schematically rendered as simple bulges of clay extending from beneath the hem of her dress; in her right hand she holds a globular jug with trefoil spout; brownish-red clay and red slip decorated with parallel bands of black paint on body and foot; frieze of olive wreaths (?) below the applied figurine; slight traces of floral decoration at junction of neck and body; traces of white slip on the figure.
