Terracotta Votary Figure

Terracotta Votary Figure

Description:

Terracotta female figure, probably a votary, holding a footed bowl in her arms; hand-made body with mould-made face; solid, plank-like body with a slightly concave front; no anatomical details are shown, but the base projects where the feet would be to create a stand; the arms are crude strips of clay applied to the upper body which wrap around the large stemmed vessel held by the woman; the head is very small in proportion to the body: rounded face with prominent bulbous eyes, pointed nose and well defined lips; prominent ears, only one well preserved; a line of curls is visible along the forehead, held in place by a narrow fillet, behind which a further line of curls is shown, then a veil or cloak; the hair falls in thick tresses on either side of the head; made of buff clay with traces of red paint on the body and vase.
