Terracotta Votary Figurine

Head and upper body of terracotta figurine of a male votary, wearing a diadem with applied floral ornament; hollow, hand-modelled head and body; the man appears to be shown standing, with his arms by the sides; only the edge of neck of his garment is shown, and not enough of the arms are preserved to indicate the length of the sleeves (though possibly these were short); oval face, the eyes are defined by ridged-sockets, applied separately; nose broken; impassive mouth; a broken stump on the chin may be the remains of a beard; prominent eye-brows shown as undecorated bands of clay (possibly applied rather than raised from the surface of the clay); his hair is shown as a single mass, painted black, falling either side of the head onto the shoulders; he wears a broad band around his forehead, with the attachment at the back of the head shown as a thinner band; attached to the front are three flowers (either with four petals with incisions down the middle, or four pairs of petals, arranged symmetrically around the centre), the central one is mostly broken away; prominent ears, with a simple spiral earring preserved on the left ear (the bottom of the right is missing) edge. Made of orange clay with small black inclusions, black paint on the hair. Dimensions: Height: 17.60 centimetres max Object Type: figure Techniques: applied; hand-modelled
