"Terracotta Votary Figure"

"Terracotta Votary Figure"

Description:

Terracotta male figure holding animal in arms, probably a votary; hollow, wheel-made body with a splaying, bell-like base; hand-made head and arms; the stylised head ends in a slight peak, possibly an indication of a cap: the tip is pierced through, probably for suspension; the junction of the body and splaying base is also perforated. Full chin and elongated nose ridge; the eyes and beard are rendered in black paint. The figure wears a kind of bandolier, and the sleeves (?) of his garment are decorated with a ladder pattern; black and red parallel bands on the body and base. The animal has an elongated body on short, stumpy legs, with a long tail; the ears and head do not allow a definite identification of the species, but is probably a calf or kid goat; the upper side of the body from head to tail is painted with a red strip.
