Indeterminate Figurine with Vessel

Indeterminate Figurine with Vessel

Description:

Terracotta figurine of a person of indeterminate sex (though probably female) holding what appears to be a vessel or perhaps an offering stand to the chest, probably a votary; hollow, wheel-made tubular body with splaying base; hand-made applied arms; solid, possibly mould-formed face (back flat and plain); oval face with slightly modelled nose, chin, mouth and ears; hair (painted in black) swept back behind the ears; eyes also painted in black; red face and neck; the arms, elbows extended outwards, are simple rounded strips of clay; the form of the vessel is uncertain, but seems to consist of a shallow dish on a pedestal; made of buff clay with black bands around the waist and down the length of the body; facial details also pained as indicated above; surface worn in places.
