Bichrome Barrel Jug

Description:

Pottery barrel-shaped jug; wheel-made; ovoid, barrel-shaped body, rounded ends with central nipple-like projections; wide cylindrical neck with central ridge, concave above; squared, everted rim; short strap handle from shoulder to neck-ridge; cream clay and slip, decorated in black and red paint: concentric bands around the body frame a large stylised bird with several pairs of wings and elaborate tail feathers facing the right (drawn in outline with hatched or filled interior); bull's eye pattern on each end of the body, with geometrical lozenge motif framed by vertical parallel lines on the shoulder above; wavy line around the neck below the ridge; surface worn in places.
