Description:

Pottery tankard in Bichrome Wheelmade ware; wheel-made; neck widening slightly to everted rim; slight ridge at neck to body join; carinated body; ring base; handle vertical originally with thumb grip projection (now missing) from below rim to shoulder; painted red and brown decoration comprising; three alternating brown framing red bands below rim and below carination, brown maltese cross motif on neck opposite handle and on either side of body above carination, brown band at neck to shoulder join, on upper body three sets of bands comprising brown cross-hatched bands with one red line to interior framing open and filled running lozenge motif; pale cream self-slip burnished vertically on neck and horizontally on shoulder to slight lustre; fabric pinkish; surface abraded over half of vessel; s-shaped crack on base means vessel was never water tight.
