Sir
vertical line across 4 linesOur first week of excavations is finished and I am hastening to send you this short report so that you will find it on your arrival at Beirut. Mission – Michael having been placed at our disposal I was able to prepare the campaign normally. At Nicosia I was in contact with Mr. Karageorghis, replacing Mr. Dikaios on holiday. My work was in this greatly facilitated by our friend who since the departure of Mr. Megaw has held the post of director of the museum, future Director of Antiquities, the other curator having been expelled for sentiments pro-English. the Forrers arrived on 3, Contensson on 6. I was able to rent for them a house of 3 rooms plus 1 separate room intended for Mr. Courtois and a small room for the toilet. This grouping of the staff seemed favourable to me (hours, transport, bedding etc.) and moreover the whole is rented for 9 £ a month, whereas last year the only room occupied by Courtois cost us 7 £ 500. the household staff includes Haris (cook 1958) assisted by his wife whom we had last year. the bedding inventory communicated by Mrs. Schaeffer corresponds to our present needs. It would therefore be necessary still to have sheets for you and Mr. Courtois as for blankets, we have five for the moment. The need is therefore identical, in view of nights which are sometimes rather cool whereas the days are really very hot
