Fertility rites at Enkomi
M CLAUDE SCHAEFFER, the French archaeologist, has resumed diggings at the Cyprus village of Enkomi. Enkomi is believed to have been the 'Nicosia' of the Island from the 16th to the 11th centuries BC.
M. Schaeffer is digging up the Southern part of the town where pottery kilns and bronze foundries have been found. Other workshops have been discovered but what they were used for is a mystery. In the centre of the industrial quarter is a big public building of red stone. It includes a factory where sex and fertility rites were practised. On an altar in the centre is a big crescent moon cut in white limestone with the horns pointing downward. Fertility symbols have been found at the foot of the altar and steel from Syria and Egyptian scarabs suggest that worship was practised there in the 12th century.
