Herr Prof. Dr. C.F.A. Schaeffer Le Castel Blanc 14, Rue Turgot St. Germain-en-Laye

France

Dear Professor Schaeffer,

With my thanks for your letter of 13.1., I should like at the same time also confirm receipt of your letter from the end of the year. Frau Kron-Forrer has brought us the clay tablet and the clay pellets overbrought. Meanwhile the conservation is nearly complete. It was quite difficult. The clay is very soft and differs in its consistency little from the fine washed-in clay in the signs. We have developed a new cleaning method for cuneiform signs, which is simple but extremely effective. The tablet must have lain on the surface for a long time, before it came under the ground and under encrustation, for one side is quite worn. To make it legible the finest hollows also had to be cleaned, which however has succeeded quite well with the new method. We shall immediately after the subsiding of the carnival currently somewhat in full swing, make the two casts for you. The signs on the pellets have come out nicely clear ... We would gladly clean for you the tablet you rescued in Beirut ... As soon as all work here is completed, I will send you news ...

With warm greetings

Yours faithfully
