Unfortunately, I myself will again be absent after 5 or 6 October, since my excavations in Cyprus and Syria begin around 15 October, and I will thus miss your and Professor Hundt's visit to Paris and Saint-Germain. I am very sorry about that.

In conclusion, I would therefore recommend that you leave the Vixdiscussion as an explorable undertaking to Jeffery in time for a decision. If then at the end of November, after my return, the situation were not sufficiently clarifiable, I could re-evaluate the question for you. In any case, if Jeffery does not immediately take a positive stance on the problem, I would not expect or even demand a decision from him. For once he has been driven into a "no", he cannot go back. - So much for Vix.

I am glad that during Dr. Karageorghis's visit to Matna the question of moulding the Enkomi (and possibly the Salamis) bronzes with the satisfaction of those involved was discussed. I have just written to Herr Professor Hundt about the moulding of the Byzantine gold and silver find from Lamaka, which Karageorghis suggested to me in Greece, where I had just met him, for Matina. I await Professor Hundt's decision on whether he would like to undertake this.

Best thanks and greetings to Herr Ankner for the two prints of the photograph I mentioned, and for yourself.

Yours very sincerely,

C.F.A. SCHAEFFER
