Alishar Dussaud Syria XIV, 1933, p. 207. C. r. de Duss. de v. d. O. Al. H. 1927, part II. 1932; Schmidt, A. H. 1928/29, p. I, 1932.
« The stratum II yielded a clearly more evolved material. In our view, it is later than 2000 B.C. as well as the fine calyx mentioned above [is inspired by Aegean metal pieces, Syria 1932, p. 305 et seq.] as does the pottery similar to that of Kultépé. The geom. painting on the vessel makes its appearance. A tabl. yielded the mention of prince Anita whom M. Kh. proposes to identify with king Anittash of Kushar. MM. Chiera, Poebel and J. Levy declare that this text is not earlier than 1800 which confirms our dating of stratum II. The str. II and III may partly overlap; but III seems to correspond to the full development of the Hittite empire: fine cups with vertic. handles and conical base decorated with a brilliant geom. painting in two tones. Stratum IV is also later than one supposes. If it goes back to 1300 or earlier – the separation is not absolute – it reaches and fills the first centuries of the 1st mill. B.C. The proof of this is provided by the abundance of fibulae and by the iron weapons. Even admitting with the support of the tabl. of El Amarna, that Asia M. was the first to make iron weapons, it did not at first do so except very exceptionally, and the practice did not spread before 1200. R. S. has not yet delivered any specimen. »
