W.F. Albright. Chronol. Babyl.
BASOR 88, 1942, p. 88: W.F.A., A third revision of the early chronology of Western Asia. – Gives first histo. of dating "... By adding the regnal years in the Khorsabad list we arrive at the date of 1726 + X – 1694 + X for the reign of Shamshi-Adad I, X being the sum of 2 reigns which are broken away on the Kh. tablet," those of the consecutive kings Assur-rabi I & Assur-nadin-ahhe I (Poebel, J.N.E.S. 1942, p. 288). P. reaches conclusion that both reigns were so short that neither king had official years, in other words X = 0. But several unproved assumptions. After A: "It is, in fact, very hazardous to reckon the two years reigns together below twenty years. Adopting this approximation, we should date the accession of Shamshi-Adad I about (en italique) 1726 + 20, or cir. 1746 B.C." – "Since Shamshi-Adad I ruled several years before his conquest of Mari, we can safely date his accession to power about 20 years before beginning of Hamm. reign, i.e. about 1748 B.C., 22 years earlier than Poebel's minimum date cir. 1726." – This would place beginning of 1st dyn. of Bab. in the year 1831-30,. The last king seems to have ruled cir. 1561-1550. So: many old historical & archaeol. difficulties are now solved & that periods of military expansion in each country dovetail nicely with similar periods in other lands. The Hyksos expansion under Khayana of the XVth dyn. falls in the second half of the 17th c.; at that time Babylon under Abi-eshush, was at one of the lowest points of its military history, while Assyria was feeble, without inscriptions, and Hittite expansion under Labarnas & his succ; had not yet begun.
