Professor C. F. A. Schaeffer, Le Castel Blanc, 14 Rue Turgot, St. Germain-en-Laye. S. et O.
Dear Professor Schaeffer,
Thank you for your letter of July 30th. I have postponed answering it in the hope that the Chair of Archaeology would meanwhile be filled. Unfortunately this matter has not yet been settled and I continue to be the Acting Head of the Department.
Let me first thank you for confirming your intention to donate the Vounous pottery to the Nicholson Museum. I can understand that you would like to retain some of the pieces for your collection at St. Germain or for publication. I am writing to Mrs. Stewart and shall send you prints of existing negatives as soon as they are ready.
As you know Mr. Merrillees has worked toward the preparation of a catalogue, which I understand is almost complete. Mr. Merrillees however would have to return to Sydney for a season before he could produce his definite text. Naturally it would be highly desirable that you add a preface.
The Administration of the University has now decided to recover all departmental material that is in the Estate of the late Professor Stewart and, with your permission I should like to make arrangements through them for the transportation of the Vounous material back to the University. We would, of course, consult you before sending any pieces to other museums and in all other matters connected with the material and I take note that donations should be labelled "Donation by Professor C. F. A. Schaeffer, Director of the French-Cyprus Expedition, in memory of Professor J. R. Stewart".
Can I hope to hear from you as soon as it is convenient?
With kind regards and all good wishes, Yours sincerely,
