Predecessor Of Salamis
Excavations At Engomi
Dr. Claude F.A. Schaeffer, of the French Archaeological Expedition no v excavating at Engomi, has alread - uncovered the remains of numerous houses of the important Bronze Age harbour town, th? predecessor of Salamis.
He has identified a post- Mycenaen town of the XIII XII th centuries B C, under which lay the ruins of the rich Myceanean town dat'ng from the XVth—X IIth centuries. The later had large houses which were repaired or rebuilt after a catastrophy. probably of seismic nature had occured in the middle of the XIVth century B C,
Underneath these towns, Dr. Schaeffer has discovered the tombs and houses of a Middle Bronze Age town (XVIIIth—XVIIth centuries B C.) separated from the succeeding establishments by a level which indicates an interruption in the life of the city oaused by some major disaster.
After initial labour difficul ties, the work of the expedition continues to progress favourably.
