NICOSIA (CYPRUS) ◙ SATURDAY 7 SEPTEMBER 1946 ◙ YEAR 41st. NO. 5704
EXCAVATIONS BEGIN AT ENKOMI ΒΑΡΩΣΙΩΝ BY FRENCH ARCHAEOLOGISTS
An official announcement concerning the arrival in Cyprus of the distinguished French archaeologist Dr Claude F. A. Schaeffer provides the information that he intends to continue the excavations of the ruins of prehistoric Enkomi, Famagusta, which he had discovered in 1934.
Dr Schaeffer, who is accompanied by two assistants, acts on behalf of the French Centre for Scientific Research. The excavations will begin immediately and will continue during the preliminary stage for about 45 days, although Dr Schaeffer intends to devote much more time later to this important site.
Enkomi, a significant Mycenaean trading centre in the last phase of the Bronze Age, predates Salamis. Its cemetery, which was excavated in the past, was exceptionally rich, and it supplied the British Museum with some of the finest Mycenaean exhibits. Dr Schaeffer hopes that he will be able to clarify the relations between prehistoric Cyprus and Syria. In Syria the famous French archaeologist discovered, following his excavations at Ras Shamra, evidence of the existence of a Cypriot colony.
The French Mission under Dr Schaeffer is the first to continue archaeological excavations in Cyprus after the war.
