Dear Dr. Schaeffer,

I am indeed sorry to be the cause of so much trouble, and I can well understand that you must be feeling very disappointed, if not a little annoyed, that your article should have gone to press in the uncorrected state. I had hoped from reading your letter to Mr. Adenolo that there was still time to make these textual changes, but I see that I was mistaken. Under the circumstances, the best I can do is to stand the cost of the revised off-prints and I shall be glad if you will kindly let me have the estimate as soon as possible. In the interests of truth, would it not be possible to publish some revised version, perhaps by an introductory addition or a footnote, perhaps, a short note explaining the circumstances that obliged me to re-examine the cup and change my opinion? As far as I am concerned, I don't in the slightest mind admitting my volteface: new knowledge has come to light and all that matters, in the interests of science, is that it should be made known.

Could let us know your views about this, and also if you have any objection to my publishing this letter I sent you on for a scientific publication. You made no mention of this in your letter.

I have passed on your message to Dr. Bolt and to the Secretary, and am enclosing Mr. Shaw's receipt herewith.

With best wishes,

Yours sincerely,
